Instructions for Thermostat Installation

Please take the time to read over the manufacturer's installation instructions, before installing your thermostat. Depending on your thermostat's model or brand, you might find that the manufacturer's installation instructions maybe slightly different. Here are the basic steps for installation:

  1.  First, turn off the power supply to the thermostat. The power supply should be located on the air handler or furnace as an On/Off switch. If you are unable to locate the power supply's On/Off switch on your air handler or furnace, turn off the power to the air handler/furnace at your home's circuit panel inside the fuse box.

  2. Using a screwdriver, remove your old thermostat and wall plate. Please remember, that older thermostats with glass tubes contain mercury. You should use caution when handling thermostats containing mercury and check for disposable instructions with your local recycling company.

  3. Depending on your heating/cooling system, your thermostat may contain up to two to five wires. Next, label these wires, noting where they were attached on your old thermostat. Secure the wires (tie them into a loop or tape them to the wall) to keep them from falling back into the wall.

  4. Install the new wall plate, if available. Keep in mind, you might need to drill new holes for the new thermostat.

  5. Connect the wires according to the manufacturer's instructions that come with your new thermostat. Also, install batteries if needed.

  6. Mount your thermostat to the wallplate, accordingly.

  7. Restore the power and program your new thermostat as directed by the manufacturer's instructions.

  8. You have successfully installed your thermostat!
